One of my fondest childhood memories encapsulates life at it’s simplest. My grandparents had a farm out in North Dakota where we’d spend a couple weeks towards the end of our summer break. The summers were hot, grasshoppers everywhere, and wheat fields as far as you could see. We worked hard while we were there and had fun in everything we did. I vividly remember each year when grandma would say “I think we could use a little jam”. We’d head over to the old dairy barn looking for a pail and the old metal berry picker. We’d head out towards the edge of my grandmother’s garden, past the compost pile and through a sea of dill to where the wild chokecherry trees grew. We’d start scraping the branches as the ripe berries fell into the picker and dump them in our pail until grandma said we had enough. We’d bring the berries inside, wash them and put them on the stove in a big pot to make her prized chokecherry jam. Once the sweet berry jam was complete she’d carefully pour it into little jam jars and we’d top it off with a wax seal.
Chokecherry jam from my grandparents farm was the taste of summer and a moment of simplicity – moments I’ll never forget.
